Most of your DNA is stored in the nucleus of your cells but did you know you have some DNA in your mitochondria – the part of your cell where energy is made. As all of this DNA comes from your mother analysing this DNA can give us a fascinating insight into evolution. But as with your nuclear DNA there can be errors in these genes, causing diseases. However recent medical advancement have enabled us to use the nuclear DNA from one woman implant it into an egg with healthy mitochondrial DNA and fertilise it with a sperm cell creating “3 parent babies”.
