How do you find a publisher that really helps to get your indie game out there? And what to look out for when negotiating a deal as an indie developer? - Manny Hachey, COO at the Hamburg-based indie studio THREAKS shares her experiences with publishing indie games.
This is the second video of Gamecity Hamburg's new series "Indie Dev Insights" where we talk to indie devs and industry experts about topics that concern indies apart from strictly development topics - like marketing, sales, funding, organization of a team - or in this case: publishing.

In this video:
Manny Hachey, Chief Operating Officer at Hamburg-based indie game studio THREAKS sat down with us, giving her perspective on working with a publisher as an independent video game studio, provided tips on how to get your game published and answered the question: What does an indie studio need a publisher for?
First up, she told us how long it takes to find a publisher, where to look for a publisher and how to tell if a publisher is right for you and your game – and if your game is right for a publisher. She gave insight into when to talk to a publisher first, steps of approaching a publisher, when your game is ready to pitch to a publisher and how to successfully prepare to pitch your game to a publisher. Also, Manny told us, what to look out for when negotiating a publishing deal and how to tell if a publisher is good or bad, e.g. how to spot a bad indie game publisher.
She explained what a publisher can do for you as an indie studio when launching your game: help with marketing of your game, getting your game funded and thus, getting your game finished. And after that: helping you to make money as an indie game developer: getting your game on the market and shipped, bring your game on the relevant platforms, e.g. bring your game on steam, the playstore or others and hopefully sell a lot of copies.
But also Manny shared with us her experiences, what the pitfalls of working with a publisher can be: For example, too rigid contracts or signing away IP rights. To avoid those pitfalls, Manny had some great practical advice for you if you are a fellow indie dev or are about to start your own indie game studio on how to avoid bad publishing deals: Always check your games publishing contract thoroughly and always get a lawyer specialized in the games industry to support you - the best how way to avoid bad publisher deals.
