Video courtesy of Michael Williams 2019. This is the first public running since major rebuild of the only genuine 1967 297cc Honda RC174 six cylinder outside of Japan. It is very similar to the one in Honda museum in Motegi Japan (except the Honda museum bike has a 1968 RC174B engine which was never raced). This bike was one of two RC174's ridden by Mike Hailwood in 1967 to win the 350cc Worlds Championship. It is not one of the fabulous George Beale replica's, one of which (number 007 of 10) can be seen standing alongside. Japanese records show this machine was in Japan as recently as 1998. It has been painstakingly stripped, restored and any worn parts replaced. Smoke coming from inside fairing after starting is new paint burning off hot exhausts. Fuel use is 115 octane leaded. Engine contains 1.8 litres Castrol R30.
Winning 6 x GP's in 1967 with lap records at every event, including the Isle of Man, Mike Hailwood won the 350cc World Championship for Honda Motor Corporation. During practice week in 1967 Mike Hailwood set an absolute lap record from a standing start at 107.5 mph. Later that meeting he increased the absolute lap record to 108.77 but this time on a flying lap and with the 500cc RC181. That record stood for 8 years until finally bettered by Mick Grant with a 750cc Kawasaki 2-stroke.
