With the surge of demand for remote online notarizations (RON), traditional Notaries have been asking us how they can start providing their services virtually.
Each state that allows RON sets its own requirements and may have a different process for becoming a remote Notary. In general, there are a few steps you can expect to take.
1. Meet your state’s requirements. For example, in some states, you must be a currently commissioned Notary Public before you apply to be a virtual Notary.
2. Take a state-approved educational course or exam specific to remote online notarization.
3. Choose a RON system or technology provider. Some RON platforms include the tools you’ll need -- such as an electronic seal, journal and a digital certificate.
4. You may need a surety bond, or an errors and omissions insurance policy that cover remote online notarizations.
5. Submit an application to your state’s Notary regulating office. You may need to pay a processing, registration, submission or application fee. Your state may also require proof of your RON service provider, course completion, exam score, surety bond and E&O policy with your application.
