The attack happened on the city's world famous main boulevard, the Champs Elysees. It's believed the gunman opened fire on a police van with an automatic weapon, killing one police officer. The gunman was reportedly known to authorities - and had previously been detained on suspicion of wanting to kill policemen. He was shot dead by police near the scene.
