When Todd McFarlane released the comics in 1992, Columbia immediately jumped on the idea of a film adaptation. However, McFarlane felt they were stifling his creativity during negotiations. For the sake of maintaining creative input, McFarlane backed out of the deal with Columbia and instead sold the rights to New Line for just $1.
