Join Julian Frost (N3JF), your Ham Radio Sensei as he shows you how to set up, test and operate the Chameleon Lightweight End-Fed Sloper antenna. Does it really work?
Note: Someone is going to say it... "It'll work better if you put the choke at the radio. End fed antennas use the coax as the counterpoise so putting the choke at the antenna feed point stops that!" I tested that. When the choke is placed at the radio end, the antenna no longer works on 17m, 12m and the (extra) 30m band. The choke does not stop the coax from being part of the antenna system. For example, the 17m band SWR rose to 4.1:1 and the 12m SWR rose to 3.2:1. The 30m SWR was 5.2:1. That is not indicative of "better performance"! The manufacturer, Chameleon Antenna states: "An RFI choke works to reduce or eliminate any common mode currents from traveling on the exterior of the shield. It has no effect on the coax acting as the counterpoise." My own tests show that to be true.
