While the AMD version has more potent Ryzen 8040HS APUs but is limited to USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports, the Intel version has Core Ultra-U series processors with lower TDP and a Thunderbolt 4 connector.
This year's HP Envy x360 2-in-1 notebook is getting processor updates from AMD and Intel so that users can select the AI-enhanced processors that they want. However, this time around, AMD has a larger assortment of processors due to higher TDP variants like the Ryzen 5 8640HS and the Ryzen 7 8840HS, whereas Intel only offers 15 W Core Ultra 5 125U and Core Ultra 7 155U CPUs.
The only platform with a Thunderbolt 4 port is Intel, as a sort of make-good for the lower-TDP chips. Unfortunately, AMD is currently limited to USB 3.2 Gen 2. Both models include two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports (one of which is charged), an audio jack, and an HDMI 2.1 video out. The Intel versions also have a Thunderbolt 4 port in addition to one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port. AMD receives two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 instead.
Apart from that, the specifications of the two platforms are nearly identical. Support is provided for PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage ranging from 512 GB to 2 TB, as well as 16 or 32 GB LPDDR5-6400 RAM.
In the majority of HP's 2024 models—including the Envy x360—the fingerprint sensor appears to have been replaced by a 5 MP webcam with an infrared sensor. With a 59 Wh battery with 65 W USB-C charging and Wi-Fi 7 + BT 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6E + BT 5.3 choices, both platforms weigh 3.1 lbs (1.4 kg) total with a 0.7-inch (1.7 cm) profile.
March is when the AMD and Intel versions will be available. The Thunderbolt 4 port on the Intel versions is primarily to blame for the starting pricing of $950 AMD and $960 Intel, respectively.
