No surgical mask?. What shall I do? Let’s make DIY protective gear as an alternative in case of shortage of face mask.
Making DIY makeshift protective gear
Conditions of making DIY protective gear
• Materials are relatively safe and reliable
• With certain extent of protection function
• Low-cost production
• Readily available household items
• Materials are easy to buy. No need for snapping up.
Materials and Tools:
1. Kitchen paper
2. Thick and breathable facial tissue paper
3. Rubber bands
4. Hole puncher
5. Adhesive tape – 2 inch wide
6. Binder clips
7. Scissors
8. Plastic-coated wires
9. A pair of glasses
10. Transparent plastic file folder
8 steps to make DIY protective gear:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly and clean your materials (with hand rub or soap)
2. Put one piece of kitchen paper on top of another at 90 degrees (to form the filter layer of a mask)
Note: Avoid overlapping the pattern on the kitchen paper as this would reduce its filtering function.
Or use 2 different brands of kitchen paper (to form the filter layer of a mask)
3. Place a piece of thick tissue paper on top of the kitchen paper as the inner layer of the mask, (to form the water-absorbing layer of the face mask)
4. Use an adhesive tape to seal off the two sides of the mask (1 inch on each side)
5. Punch two holes on each sealed side
6. Attach the plastic-coated wire with paper tape to the top edge of the mask to make the nose bridge wire. Glasses can be used to fix the position of nose bridge if no such wires available.
Note: Do not use metallic wires without plastic-coating to avoid hurting eyes or face.
7. Tie 4 rubber bands/strings through the holes on the mask’s sides and adjust the length. (Ensure the face mask fit properly over the face. Not too tight nor too loose.)
8. Cut the transparent plastic file folder into half. Attach one piece on the edge of the glasses with binder clips to prevent droplets from coming in. (to serve as the waterproof shield of the face mask)
Friendly Reminder:
• The DIY face mask is only for temporary use in case of shortage of face mask.
• Never reuse the DIY face mask.
• Standard surgical mask is always preferable.
