FISH TANK SPONGE FILTERS ARE SO EFFECTIVE! They REMOVE TONS OF DEBRIS FROM WATER!
I am so impressed with my sponge filters. I use Aquarium Co-Op sponge filters because they are so COARSE. They collect SO MUCH DEBRIS from the water in my tanks. (AQUARIUM CO-OP SPONGE FILTER product link listed below).
How they work: A COARSE sponge filter collects passing debris in the tank. They are used for BIOLOGICAL FILTRATION meaning they collect debris and ALSO provide a place for bacteria to grow and flourish which also contributes to an aquarium's successful nitrogen cycle. Once a month I will remove the sponge and rinse it out in a bucket (with dirty tank water during a water change). They are a tube like plastic structure that is hollow inside. A coarse sponge is placed over the tube. Inside the tube a small pice of airline tubing is connected to the inside of the top of the green plastic you will see in this video. An additional long piece of airline tubing then connects to an air pump. These provide some gentle aeration in an aquarium as well as massive debris collection.
TO REMOVE A SPONGE FILTER FROM AN AQUARIUM
Be sure to grab a large ziplock bag and have it handy. Disconnect the airline tubing from the sponge. Fill the ziplock up with tank water inside the tank. Gently place the sponge inside the ziplock and remove it from the tank (otherwise you will have debris ALL OVER YOUR TANK!) Place the dirty sponge inside a bucket of tank water and squeeze and rinse out. Once done, connect the airline tubing back up and place back in your tank. You will be surprised how much gunk and debris the sponge has absorbed in such a short amount of time.
I personally use Aquarium Co-Op sponge filters in a size medium. Cory at Aquarium Co-Op has sponges that are COARSE which means they absorb tons of debris. I have tried other brands but their models are tough sponges that do not collect the debris like a coarse sponge does.
