According to Suetonius, Augustus once said: “I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble.”

It is very debatable how many structures were actually converted to marble and how many new marble buildings were built. But this video is not really about the quote from Suetonius. And not about Augustus. Here I'd like to unpack a couple of misconceptions about construction techniques of Ancient Romans. And also briefly address the problem with wildly inaccurate depictions of white marble buildings and monochromatic statues we can see in the films and in the paintings.
