The Johnnys are an Australian pub rock band from Sydney forming in 1982 and still active today that combines country and punk musical styles. Members are Graham Hood, Billy Pommer Jr and Slim Doherty and have included founder, Roddy Ray'da (aka Roddy Radalj) and Spencer P. Jones. According to rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, "Despite being one of the most popular bands on the pub-rock circuit, The Johnnys never crossed over into the premier league".
Their debut album Highlights of Dangerous Life was released in August 1986 by Mushroom Records and was produced by Ross Wilson of Daddy Cool and contained the three singles.
Green Back Dollar is track six, written by Ken Ramsey and Hoyt Axton. It was released as a single in Australia in 1986 with Move It as the B-side.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
There's some they call me no account
And others that say I'm no good
Well I'm just a poor travellin' man
I'm doin' what I think I should, oh Lord
I'm doin' what I think I should
[Chorus]
And I don't give a damn about a greenback dollar
I spend it fast as I can
A wailin' song and a good guitar
That's the only thing I understand, oh Lord
The only thing I understand
[Verse 2]
When I was a child
My mama said, "Hey son
Well do what you will, you'll grow to be a man
Sing what must be sung, oh Lord"
Well I sing what must be sung
[Chorus]
But I don't give a damn about a greenback dollar, yeah
I spend it fast as I can
A wailin' song and a good guitar
That's the only thing I understand, oh Lord
The only thing I understand
[Instrumental Break]
[Verse 3]
Well now that I've grown to be a man
I've travelled here and there
But there's one thing I learned, that a drink and a song
They're the only ones that ever cared, oh Lord
The only ones that ever cared
[Chorus]
Well I don't give a damn about a greenback dollar, yeah
I spend it fast as I can
A wailin' song and a good guitar
That's the only thing I understand, oh Lord
The only thing I understand
[Chorus/Outro]
I don't give a damn about a greenback dollar
I spend it fast as I can
A wailin' song and a good guitar
That's the only thing I understand, oh Lord
The only thing I understand
That's all I really understand, yeah
And that's all I understand, yeah
And that's all I understand, yeah
Ah Lord, talk about it, yeah
Ah just one thing I'm talking about, yeah
