This video explains a poem by Li Bai praising the courage and loyalty of a young Knight Errant. Li Bai is quite unique among the scholar-official poets of the Tang Dynasty. He was not your typical Confucian scholars committed to Confucian values such as being loyal to your kings or emperors as well as showing compassion towards the commoners as exemplified by his young friend, an equally important poet, Du Fu. His ambition was political power or immortality. He truly believed that one could achieve immortality by practicing Daoist religion and martial art. He was torn between these two opposing goals all his life. Sometimes he stayed in a Daoist monastery to practice Daoism. Other times he eagerly pursued a political career by visiting high rank officials and members of royal clan to get recommendations or directly joining an ambitious prince. His appreciation of the lifestyle of Knight Errant expresses the ambiguity in his values eloquently. This video also presented the cultural and historical contests of the heroes mentioned in the poem which provide a foundation for viewers to have a more in-depth appreciation of the cultural and historical significance of the poem!
