"Akalabeth: World of Doom" released in 1979 for the Apple II was one of the first commericially sold RPG games. With the release of an Ultima collection it has been ported to DOS and named "Ultima 0".
The map, your stats and the dungeons are all randomly generated based on a "lucky number" you input at the start of the game. The goal is to find Lord British's castle and do his quests until he finally sends you to kill a Balrog deep inside the dungeons. Upon killing a Balrog and returning to Lord British, you win the game.
Lord British's quest is actually based on your Wisdom stat. There are 10 monsters in total he can send you to kill. Your Wisdom stat divided by 3 dictates which monster you are sent to kill first and then you are sent to kill the remaining stronger monsters on each following quest. If your Wisdom is 30 or higher when you visit Lord British the first time, you immediately get the final quest.
There is an overpowered transform spell in this game, which randomly will either set all your stats to 3 or multiply them by 2.5. With this it's not a problem to immediately get very high stats and get the final quest.
The randomness in this game is primitive enough that I could map out a sequence of events where my magic amulet will never break and the transform spell always gives me the good result.
