One of the most common injuries in sports is a sprained ankle. Ankle sprains can occur during activities of daily living such as walking down the stairs and missing a step.
Regardless of the mechanism of injury, anyone who has suffered an ankle sprain wants to know the fastest way to get back on their feet.
Growing up, we all heard of the acronym RICE
- Rest
- Ice
- Compression
- Elevation
It was extremely popular, but is that truly the most effective way to speed up your recovery after an ankle sprain? Over the last few years there has been a push to start some level of activity sooner and rest less in order to speed up the recovery process after an ankle sprain.
We now recommend a different protocol POLICE:
- Protect
- Optimum Loading (this is the O-L in POLICE... silly, we know)
- Ice
- Compression
- Elevation
