This video looks at another recent controversy, but it only uses the controversy to ask another question: what do people, and the media, mean, when they talk about "urban" or "rural"?
Recently, a news organization said that attendees at a rally for Betsey Johnson in "rural Oregon" were wearing confederate flag t-shirts. And while that by itself is a controversy, it is also interesting that the news outlet referred to this as taking place in "rural Oregon". As this video shows, it actually took place in a city that is within easy commuting distance of Portland.
I use this as an opportunity to look at how the connotations of "urban", "suburban" and "rural" have overtaken their denotations.
This is my pet topic, and feel free to skip me ranting about this again! :)
