Why is Morphine Used at The End of Life A Simple Explanation
A lot of people ask me about morphine use at the end of life. Is morphine safe in the dying person? Why is morphine used when someone is dying? What does morphine do for a dying person? Does morphine speed up death? Does morphine shut down the organs? These are some of the most common questions I get asked, and unfortunately there are a lot of misunderstandings and misconceptions even among healthcare providers.
In this video, I wanted to offer one simple explanation for the use of morphine at the end of life.
Just like it takes labor to be birthed into this world, it takes labor to die and leave this world. Neither are necessarily "pretty" experiences, but they both offer moments of compassion, grace, and meaning if we allow it.
