📍Project: Microlimano
📜 Details: Mikrolimano or Fanari or port of Koumundourou , formerly Turkolimano and in ancient times Port of Munich , is today a tourist location and is included in the wider district of Kastella. It is located in the north-east of the Piraeus peninsula , bordering the district of Neos Faliros. Today, because of the cafes and night entertainment centers, it has given impetus to the intensification of night entertainment.
Port of Munich, the right lighthouse (inbound) on ancient walls.
It was called Fanari during Byzantine times probably from the existence of a lighthouse or lantern at its entrance. It was called Turkolimano from the time of the Greek revolution of 1821 onwards, while Koumoundouros port was called in more recent times because at its southern end there was the mansion of Koumoundours after the demolition of which the Naval Club of Greece was erected.
In 1925 , the special committee that was set up at that time to correct the toponyms and signs of Piraeus officially named this port, restoring the ancient name Port of Munich. However, the new name did not manage to be established, due to the bad sound in modern Greek, compared to the prevailing Turkolimanos, until 1967 when the then mayor Aristidis Skylitsis , by his decision, established the new name Mikrolimano after the assistance provided by Services (Post Office, Telegraph Office, etc.) which have since ceased to serve the area with a previous name.
