"I am calling it a 'New Wave Safari'," said designer Ennio Capasa backstage before his summer menswear show got underway.

It was a fitting title for a collection that mixed safari jackets and full legged pants in ethnic prints with tops, belts and coats adorned with metal eyelet details.

This collection was very much in keeping with the rock'n'roll aesthetic the brand has built its name on.

And as always with the Costume National collections, the difference is in the details.

Shoes with soles attached with a zipper or designed to open up into a sandal and bombers that morph into a travel bag are a few of the ways Capasa draws you in.

The layers of lightweight fabric, with some jackets weighing in at less than 100 grams, also points to the designer's continued fascination with fabric innovation.

There was an ease about this collection.

It had a quiet strength that referenced the past without getting bogged down by it.
