During the Second World War, a huge number of executions took place and many of these were war crimes committed by various different nations. One such crime was ordered by German General Anton Dostler. He was a high up member of the Wehrmacht, and was well respected by Hitler however he was placed in charge of overseeing large amounts of troops in Italy. As the Allies sought to get a foothold in Italy, a raid occurred in which 15 American soldiers landed in Italy with the intention of blowing up a tunnel. This would have disrupted the communications between the Germans, however the soldiers were wearing US Army uniforms.
This meant that once they were captured they should have been treated as Prisoners of War. Dostler however once they were captured on the orders of Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, ordered the execution of the 15 American Commandos. They were shot by firing squads in Italy, however after the Second World War information was found about this, and Dostler was arrested and brought to trial. He tried to claim that he was simply following orders however this was not accepted and for this he was sentenced to death.
Anton Dostler was taken to Averno where he faced a firing squad. A 12 man squad was gathered to carry out the execution and Dostler was tied to a stake. Within minutes of him arriving at the firing range, the squad had executed him and he was then buried in a German military cemetery. Anton Dostler's true death sentence was when he signed the order to execute those US soldiers who should have been treated fairly.
