The Japanese scabbard chisel or saya nomi is a woodworking tool used to make scabbards for Japanese swords. The tradition of mounting samurai swords in wooden scabbards easily goes back a thousand years. But the tool is not limited to that purpose. It's actually a great tool for general woodworking. In this video, swordsmith Walter Sorrells forges several saya nomi.
