In this video, I'm taking a look at Chrono Odyssey, an upcoming MMO developed by NPIXEL. It was brought to my attention by emote artist extraordinaire, Julia, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. This is only their second trailer, which was launched two years after the first one, but it was entirely cinematic. This trailer we actually get to see a lot of gameplay for the MMO.
So, is this an MMO worth throwing on our radar alongside the multitudes of others that are likely still years away and may or may not have gameplay elements we don’t like? I went over to their website to find out more.
First off, NPIXEL are the developers of Gran Saga, a mobile MMO that released in Korea in 2021 and features cross-play between mobile and PC. It's an anime MMO, and I went to MMOBytes, my no. 1 source for anime MMOs, to get a feel for what they thought about it. They covered the game a lot, especially the trailers, but one thing I noticed was that it had no rating.

Chrono Odyssey, on the other hand, is an open-world MMO with action combat and incredible graphics. The website presents the setting of the game as your adventure against the endless war against the “Void.” The world is twisted by chaos in both time and space with contradicting timelines (hence Chrono in the title). There are five different opposing forces: The Guardians, The Void, The Broken, The Outcasts, and The World Movers.
The more interesting parts come from the trailer itself. Beyond the stunning graphics, fantastic voice overs that bring to mind Elden Ring trailers, we get a lot of things we can infer. Action Combat looks to be a big part of the game, but more muted than say, BDO. It looks grounded and gritty and honestly? Really freaking cool. I love the way the combat looks here and I’m not even a huge fan of action combat. We even get to see ragdoll physics throughout as enemies are defeated and just kind of fall or fly off limply to the ground.
But perhaps most interesting of all is tied to the Chrono aspect of the game. We get to see a few instances where you dramatically slow down time or actually reverse it. The reversing part will be great for a player like me who often finds ways to fall down steep cliffs. But if I do happen to fall, it does at least look like I’ll be able to climb back up since this MMO has climbing.
My take-away from this is kind of mixed. If this was a single-player RPG like FFXVI, I think I’d be jumping around with excitement because so much of it looks incredible. But as an MMO, and coming from a team that has only just recently launched their very first MMO, I’m going to be prudent and say that I’ll be optimistic but wait to see what we get as more details filter out. For now, it’s very firmly in the wait-and-see column, but that’s only because years of disappointments have made me wary. For now, it joins games like Pax Dei on my list of: watch it develop from afar
