Which Sound is your favorite?
For today's Three Sounds video we are taking a look at the brand new Ixion Optical Compressor from Spaceman Effects. The Ixion is a optical photocell based compressor that is capable of a wide range of sounds thanks to it's unique control set up. The Ixion is very a very musical compressor, that sounds good at any setting and can be utilized on many different instruments for great results.
The Ixion has 5 knobs. Level controls the make-up gain to compensate for the compression, there is a lot of volume on tap so it can also be used to boost your amp into overdrive.
Threshold controls the amount of signal entering the sidechain and at what level the compression kicks in. At max, gain reduction is 6:1.
Mix controls the ratio of your dry signal to compressed signal. Going from 95% dry at the lowest and 95% Wet at the maximun, This is very useful for parallel compression tones where you want to preserve the attack of your transients.
Contour blends from a custom loudness filter at counterclockwise to flat response at the max. This has a big impact on your bottom end, and is excellent for Bass/Synths.
Treble controls the high end of your signal, warmer sounds counter clockwise, flat response at noon, and a top end boost as your turn clockwise.
Last but not least is the Sidechain input. This is used to send independent audio signal into the compressor and have it control the amount of compression. In the second clip, I'm feeding the kick drum signal into the sidechain and using that to create a rhythmic pulse on my guitar signal. You can also plug in an expression pedal to this jack to control the compressor manual, or using an insert cable to run an entire effects chain.
