In this episode we will look at Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor).

Christ the Redeemer or Cristo Redentor in Portuguese is a statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and is considered one of the wonders of the modern world. The Statue is considered a cultural Icon for both Brazil and Christianity and is visited by millions of people every year.

The Christ the Redeemer statue is 30 meters or 98 feet tall from head to toe. The statue stands on an 8 meter or 26 foot high pedestal.
That means from the base of the pedestal to the top of Christs head the distance is about 38 meters or 124 feet. Even more impressively, if you calculate in the height of the mountain, the top of Christs head is 738 meters or 2, 424 feet from sea level. In addition to its great height, Christ the Redeemers arms stretch 28 Meters or 92 feet wide and the statue weighs in at a whopping 635 metric tons. All this makes Christ the Redeemer the largest art deco monument in the world.

To get up to the statue there are several options including a 3 hour hike, taking a van or taxi or the easiest, fastest and most economical way is to simply take the tram that runs up the mountain side.
The ride up and down allow for a different view off the mountain when you can get one and as you can see there is lots of room so social distancing is pretty easy.

Once we got to the top and exited the train we still were not at the statue yet. The train dropped us off below the actual peak and I will point out that there is a lift making the statue accessible for people with mobility issues as well as taking up a stroller but I of course chose to climb the stairs.
The climb up takes a little bit of time, especially considering other people will be in front of you and everyone has their own pace. Climbing to me is always nice. When I got to the top. As you can see there is a pretty nice view. The mountain is much taller than it looks from the ground. As I turned and looked I also realized so is the statue.

The statue to me was not a big draw aside from the fact that I didn’t want to come to Rio and not visit it. The view however is quite nice if you can find a space among all the tourists. Even during COVID-19 it was very difficult to get away from all the people once I was out on the viewing area.

After a quick walk around and taking a few hundred images I was ready to go. There really is not a lot to do up at the top of the mountain and I found it rather boring. I was raised Christian but I don’t see what the big deal is about a giant Jesus statue on a mountaintop.

If you plan to visit Rio, more than likely you will want to take a trip up to see this icon. Before you go here are some things to consider.
Check the weather, if there is rain or its foggy you will have no view down onto the city or out over the ocean. Since this is the real reason to visit you will be wasting a trip.

There is no cover from the sun while up on the mountain so consider wearing sun block or a hat. If you do wear a hat, it is very windy so be sure it fits snug or has a strap or string so it won’t blow away.
Sunglasses are also a good plan because even when it is overcast it gets very bright up at the statue.

Bring some bottled water or other fluids with you. If you have a child or children consider bringing a snack. The cafés at the top of the mountain are extremely over priced and if you want to eat the food really is just not that good.

Christ the Redeemer is a cultural icon for Brazil and Christians around the world and is the largest art deco monument in the world. Christ the Redeemer is considered a modern wonder and you simply can not visit Rio de Janeiro without going to see Christ the Redeemer.
