Hello bonjour, and welcome to your Bonner Private wine Video, I’m your host Julien and here we’re talking about the Chardonnay wine you’ve received as part of your domestic wine selection, US wines we’ve cherry-picked for you throughout the best vineyard areas of the West Coast. Here we’ll discuss what is the backstory of this wine, what you should expect from it in terms of style, my tasting note’s highlights, food pairing suggestions and when to drink it. Let’s go.
Sojourn Cellars is a renown winery established in the Sonoma County that sources grapes from some of the best vineyards in the area. For making their Chardonnay wine crisper and more elegant than your average California Chardonnay, they look for cooler sites that preserve the acidity and the freshness, the lightness of the fruit character. This is an exclusive 2017 vintage Chardonnay of which only 450 cases were made so you’re one of the very few who can taste it. We are on the Sonoma Coast, so the coastal part of the Sonoma County, North of San Francisco, and West of the Napa Valley. We’re only 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean so this is a cool area, pretty much as cool as it gets in Northern California with ths typical sticky and dense cold morning fogs. Durell Vineyard the grapes for this wine were sourced from is one of the most reputable growers and vineyard sites in Sonoma. And Sojourn works with two blocks here, The Hill block planted in the 1990’s that gives very low yields of small clusters of berries which provides the flavor concentration, and the Barn block that is on the rocky soil of an old creek bed. The Barn Block provides minerality and fresh acidity to the blend. This Chardonnay was fermented in French oak barrels to enrich the texture and depth.
What I love in this wine is first its smell, that is like a basket of freshly picked and gorgeous mixed fruits, juicy and sweet white peach and apricot, grapefruit and lime, pineapple and green mango. On the palate, the wine feels creamy and smooth with a salivating silky texture, while the vibrant and precise acidity provides a surprisingly refreshing and zingy feel. Mineral and round all at once, rich and pungent flavors of lime and tropical fruits that are surrounded by abundant sweet spices and delightful notes of lemon blossoms. Textural, zingy, and explosive. It’s rare to have all these qualities combined in a Chardonnay, such freshness and concentration.
An extremely versatile wine in terms of food pairing because it’s so balanced. The only thing, I’d say go with elegantly flavored dishes, not too powerful a dish, because this is an elegant Chardonnay you don’t want to overwhelm with too rich a food, but other than that, have fun with it, it’ll be perfect on fish and seafood obviously, but fantastic with a delicate pasta dish as well, white meats, mildly-flavored roasts, poultry, virtually everything that is not too strong. And it’s so delicious you can have it on its own or with appetizers before a meal.
It’s perfect to drink now, but if you want to cellar it, this type of Chardonnay is built to age easily for ten years or more so you can store as well no problem, it’ll only complexify and deepen during that time.
Enjoy this delicious Chardonnay, and I will see you soon with another video from the Bonner Private Wine Partnership. Cheers
