Happy Posthumous 80th Birthday to George Harrison! As a tribute, I recorded a cover of one of my favourite Harrison solo songs, “This Is Love” (composed by George Harrison with Jeff Lynne) from his 1987 album Cloud Nine; it brings up very sunny and warm memories and I love the message in the lyrics, not to mention his slide guitar solo that almost brings me to tears every time I hear it. I’m not a good singer and I had no choice but to recreate George’s amazing guitar solo as best as I could (albeit played on a lap steel guitar instead), but I hope this cover does justice to a great song and honours an incredible musician.
My cover version was recorded on a mix of analog and digital recording technology — the basic track (acoustic guitars, bass, one electric guitar part) was recorded on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder, which was then transferred to a DAW for additional overdubs with instruments I’m less experienced at playing in as few takes as possible (before the tape potentially stretches too much and/or breaks) — drums, mandolin, lap steel, additional electric guitar, and vocals. Also, that's my dog who walked into my studio space and jumped up on me as I finished singing the very last note of the harmony vocal on the ending...I guess she wanted to pay tribute to George in her own way too!
I'm not very good at sing-into-the-camera style music videos, so I decided to incorporate a time-lapse video of myself drawing a sketch of George Harrison from the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, along with some pictures of my dog and places I've been in the last few years that fit with the warm and happy vibe of this song. All drawings and pictures are from my private collection.
Enjoy and excuse any mistakes or shortcomings!
