Canada is working toward Sustainable transportation and it is well-positioned to do so. Canada is the only country in the western hemisphere that can produce batteries and electric vehicles (EV) from start to finish.
It starts with mining the critical materials– graphite, nickel, aluminum, copper, lithium, cobalt, and manganese – which are all abundant in Canada. “Canada has one of the richest endowments in the world for the cathode and the anode materials that you need for batteries. So, in a growing EV market, it would only make sense that you would want to set up that supply chain around the place where the materials are mined.” Trent Mell, CEO, First Cobalt Corp. Canada currently ranks 4th in the world and 1st in North America for raw material capacities in the battery supply chain and is expected to rise to 3rd by 2025.
Canada’s long-standing advantages in automotive manufacturing are perfectly transferable to electric vehicle manufacturing, offering Canada a unique advantage in forming a “mines to mobility” supply chain. Not only does Canada have the ability to source the minerals and build the batteries necessary for EVs but it also has the engineering know-how and facilities to recycle battery components.
With direct access to growing markets in the US and Europe and with global OEMs committed to manufacturing EVs in Canada, the opportunity for investment in Canada resides in all segments of the supply chain.
