I bet that thumbnail got your attention! Yes, today on the Outer ID's, I have decided to showcase another Sony related logo, this time being another Columbia one! What you might not know... and goodness me, I certainly didn't... that this is a very rare variant of the 1994 to Late 2000's logo. I say that because, not many people have seen this variant before. Unless you were subscribed to Sagan Blob's channel when this video was up. Yes, this is a recording of a solo logo upload by Sagan Blob Enterprises, way back in 2014 or 2016... I think. My memory gets fuzzy with these old videos I recorded with my Olympus camera.
So this variant of the Columbia logo comes from an obscure German film called "Viktor Vogel: Commercial Man". However, I didn't know this for about four years! This was likely because the description of the upload had it labeled Viktor FOGEL as if he was some kind of director or something. So I tried to search "Commercial Man" on YouTube, but it was a dead end for me. I couldn't find the film where this logo came from, other than Sagan Blob's upload of it of course. I pretty much forgot about logo and the movie it came from. I never even heard of this "Commercial Man" movie before, so this logo variant came out of nowhere for me. It wasn't until this year that I was searching for DVDs that had recordings on them that I came across the movie with the title "Commercial Man"... and when I tried to search it up again... I came up with nothing... or did I?
Yup, I managed to find out the full title of the movie by complete accident when searching for it on Google. The full title of this movie is called "Viktor Vogel: Commercial Man", which made the search for this movie all the more difficult. Probably not helping matters that it was a foreign film from Germany and not an American one. Just when I think I know all the films out there... This one comes out at me from nowhere! Heck, I bet none of you even heard of the film this logo variant comes from. It's that obscure!
In fact, when this movie was released on VHS and DVD in North America, it was called "Advertising Rules", and upon skimming through a VHS Opening video of the NA release, the film's variant doesn't seem present on that version, instead opting for the regular Columbia logo and a title card that says that the film is called "Advertising Rules" in select countries. I'm not sure if me laptop can play DVDs from different regions. I may have to settle for a VCD of the film. Oh, yeah, let's talk about the variant that only appears in the PAL versions of the film, shall we?
So the logo plays out as the normal Columbia logo does, but with out the theme music and slightly sepia toned. Once the logo finishes zooming out and the name and byline fade in, a 2D animated bird flies in towards the screen and back out into the background of the logo, cawing. The logo then smash cuts to black upon the bird's last caw, which echoes after the logo has ended. I guess the bird is there because of the main character's last name "Vogel", which is German for "bird".
So that's the rarely seen Columbia logo variant from "Viktor Vogel: Commercial Man" or "Advertising Rules!" as it is known here, a film I and my viewers have not heard of until now! Hope this logo upload helps sperad more awareness towards the film. Maybe I might pick up the film from eBay... well, the NA release of it anyway... as I'm not sure the disk drive on my Lenovo Laptop can play DVDs from a different region... That's all for today! See you next time for some more logo uploads!
