Driving the #Mojave Road from east to west means saving the deep water crossings for almost the very end. On Day 3 with two #Mitsubishi #Monteros on the iconic trail, HotCars contributor Michael Van Runkle leads his dad down out of the lava flows, across the long washboard south of Baker, and onto the dry salt of Soda Lake to check out Travelers Monument.
Next, the two rigs head up through the blown sand of the Mojave River wash, where the conditions present an entirely different experience compared to only a few weeks earlier driving a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.
Through Afton Canyon and past the water crossings, the dry road crawls up a surprisingly steep and sandy grade towards the ruins of Camp Cady. On this final day of the adventure, the two Monteros manage to make it back to civilization, despite using a bit more fuel than the brand-new Jeep.
