Rome (Roma in Italian) is the capital of Italy and the Lazio region. The city has three million (in the immediate urban area) or four million (in the metropolitan area) inhabitants, making it the largest city in Italy.
According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BC. Founded in 1000 BC, it was for a long time the center of the Roman Empire and the most powerful and important city in the Mediterranean. Because of this historical relevance and the wealth of imposing buildings and important museums, Rome is also known as the "Eternal City" and is a popular travel destination for tourists from all over the world.
In addition, the state (of) Vatican City is located in the middle of Rome. The Vatican is an independent enclave entirely surrounded by Italy, the center of Catholicism and the seat of the Pope, who is also the Bishop of Rome. The old town and the Vatican City including St. Peter's Basilica have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1980.
