New Zealand officially celebrates Māori New Year (Matariki) for the first time. Fireworks light up the Wellington night sky over the harbour on June 24.
Matariki, the Māori New Year, is marked by the rise of Matariki (the group of stars also called Pleiades star cluster) which usually occurs mid-winter. This festival reflects New Zealand's bi-cultural heritage. For Māori, Matariki heralds a time of remembrance, joy, and peace and for communities to come together and celebrate.
"Matariki is an abbreviation of ‘Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea (‘The eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea’) and refers to a large cluster of stars, known in European tradition as the Pleiades. According to Māori tradition, the god of the wind, Tāwhirimātea, was so angry when his siblings separated their parents, Ranginui the sky father and Papatūānuku the earth mother, that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens."
