STORYLINE:
Dozens of Ugandan tanks and vehicles have been arriving by rail in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa where they are being loaded onto ships destined for Somalia.
Approximately 1,000 peacekeepers from Uganda are the vanguard of a larger force authorised by the United Nations to help the transitional government assert its authority.
The government, backed by troops from neighbouring Ethiopia, toppled Islamic militia in the country in late December, but is struggling to keep control.
Insurgents believed to be the remnants of Somalia's Council of Islamic Courts have staged almost daily attacks against the government, its armed forces or the Ethiopian military.
The forces destined for Somalia are part of the African Union's (AU) mission to bring peace to the troubled country.
When the first Ugandan peacekeepers arrived in Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Tuesday, they were greeted with a mortar attack and a major firefight.
On Wednesday, attackers ambushed the peacekeepers in Mogadishu, setting off another gunfight.
The United States has committed 14 (m) million U.S. dollars for the African Union peacekeeping mission to Somalia and has asked Congress for 40 (m) million more.
Several other African countries have promised troops, but no date has been set for their arrival.
The African peacekeepers are expected to reach a level of 8-thousand and are allowed to defend themselves if attacked, but not to initiate offensives according to African Union Peace and Security Commissioner Said Djinnit.
