The Parable of the Mustard Seed is a short, but important story about the Kingdom of God:
"The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
Matthew 13:31-32
Mustard seeds are very small, but they grow into large plants.
Likewise, the Kingdom of God begins with the small faith of only a few people but grows to become great.
Later in the Gospels Jesus tells the disciples that if they have "faith the size of a mustard seed," they will be able to move mountains.
In contrast, consider what we might expect in the Kingdom of God. If God is great and powerful, then shouldn't his kingdom begin with greatness?
No, in fact, the Kingdom of God begins with those who are the smallest, the least, and the most reliant upon God in faith.
The question for us is: are we seeking to become small so God can make a great kingdom out of our faith?
