Sometimes the most interesting films to learn about are the ones that were full of promise and original ideas, but for whatever reason, never got made. Numerous examples include Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon and Tim Burton’s Superman Lives, but today we’ll be looking at what would have been the feature length directorial debut of everyone’s favorite family-friendly icon, Marilyn Manson. This film would have been an avant-garde horror film that would have intersected with both Lewis Carroll’s life, Manson’s life, and of course Alice in Wonderland. It would have also presumably pushed the horror genre itself forward with innovative filmmaking and marketing techniques. But given Manson’s ever-controversial reputation, particularly when it comes to Evan Rachel Wood, is it perhaps a good thing that it never got made? Or might it have shed even more light on Manson’s troubled psyche and become an influential arthouse horror film?
Extra special shout out to Brandon from @bwlfarmer, without whom this series would not have been possible.
