Santiago ( pronounced in European Portuguese : [sɐ̃ˈtjagu] ; pronounced in Brazilian Portuguese : [sɐ̃tʃiˈagu] or [sɐ̃ˈtjagu]; pronounced in Spanish : [san̪ˈtja.ɣo] ; literally "São Tiago"), sometimes called Santiago de Chile (in Spanish : Santiago de Chile , pronounced: [san̪ˈtja.ɣo ðe ˈtʃi.le] ( listen ( help info ) ) )about this sound to distinguish it from homonymous cities, is the capital and largest cityfrom Chile . It is located in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago , in the Chilean central valley, next to the Andes mountain range . It is the largest, most important and developed urban , financial , cultural and administrative center in the country. Called Greater Santiago or simply Santiago , it is an agglomeration that has 32 communes in full and 11 communes in part. Most of Santiago is in the province of the same name , with some peripheral sectors within the provinces of Maipo , Cordillera and Talagante🇧🇷
In the year 2017, the conurbation stretched over 641.4 km² and had a population of 6 257 516 inhabitants, [ 1 ] which is equivalent to about 35.6% of the total population of the country in that year. According to these figures, Santiago is effectively the seventh most populous city in Latin America , the 40th in the world and one of the 45 most populous metropolitan areas in the world. [ 2 ]
The city of Santiago is home to the main government agencies (with the exception of the National Congress, located in the city of Valparaíso ), financial, administrative, commercial and cultural in Chile. Santiago is also ECLAC 's headquarters , in addition to being considered the third Latin American capital with the best quality of life, [ 3 ] after Montevideo ( Montevideo in European Portuguese ) and Buenos Aires , and a "Beta +" Global City , according to studies from the Globalization and World Cities Research Network . [ 4 ]It is considered the 2nd most competitive city in Latin America and the 60th in the world. [ 5 ] In addition, it is ranked as the 53rd richest city in the world, with an estimated GDP of USD 93 billion ( USD 93 billion in European Portuguese ) in 2005 and expected to reach USD 205 billion (USD 205 billion USD in European Portuguese) by 2020.
