We travelled to Somerset to meet The UK's leading apple cider brandy distiller. The Somerset Cider Brandy Company and Burrow Hill Cider produce some of the UK's finest hard cider and indeed apple cider brandy. A product most people will recognise as coming from Calvados in Normandy. Spearheaded by owner and master brewer Julian Temperley and his daughter Matilda, this family run business was the first in the UK to revive the ancient art of cider brandy distillation. The UK has a long history of cider production with the earliest evidence of apple fermentation going as far back as 3000 BC and Somerset could well be considered the epicentre of British cider production (although the fine folk in Herefordshire may have something to say about this) Those of you with a keen eye will recognise the cider bus in their forecourt from Glastonbury festival where Burrowhill cider has been a feature from the very beginning years, and Burrowhill itself where this video begins is also said to be the burial place of King Arthur. So with a nod to our French counterparts across the water join me and raise a glass, to Julian, the Somerset Cider Brandy Company, to King Arthur, the great British apple and this one of our finest beverages cider.
