STORYLINE
World Youth Day organisers have decided to move the venue where Pope Francis was due to celebrate Sunday's Mass after four days of steady showers turned the rural countryside location 50 kilometres (30 miles) west of Rio de Janeiro into a giant pit of mud.
The venue initially planned in Campus Fidei, in Guaratiba City, was moved to Brazil's famous Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro.
A 13-kilometre pilgrimage (8 miles) that was also planned, will also not happen anymore.
According to Rio de Janeiro Mayor, Eduardo Paes, the place was a danger to the well being of the pilgrims.
Close to 1,500 soldiers had been performing drills in Guaratiba to simulate unexpected situations and improve reaction times in these types of cases.
Parts of the stage, equipment and other preparations like portable bathrooms and health care tents will be moved from the field to Copacabana before this Saturday.
Residents of Guaratiba were excited about Pope Francis' visit, but were disappointed when they heard the event had been moved.
While others thought the money used to organise should have been spent in the community.
"I think this money should have been spent in a better way. In the community, in hospitals, in many other things," said Suely de Mendonca, a local resident.
Organisers expected around two (m) million people to flock Copacabana Beach in the following days.
