Toronto Mayor John Tory announced on Thursday the expansion of the city’s digital Main Street program to help local businesses to develop or expand their online services during the pandemic.
Mayor Tory welcomed the prime minister’s announcement on providing help for small businesses in the form of the Canadian Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance Program.
Tory said he believes if the program rolled out quickly and in cooperation with the province of Ontario it would make a real difference in saving many of the small businesses in Toronto.
Tory also announced that the city began to implement the provincial emergency order limiting work to a single long-term care home, which strengthens actions the city itself took last month.
Starting Thursday, workers in the city’s 10 long-term care homes will have to sign a declaration affirming their decision regarding a single-employer.
Those unable to commit will be placed on an unpaid leave of absence lasting the length of the emergency order and their positions will remain secure.
Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health, announced that Toronto had a total of 2,881 cases of COVID-19 as of Thursday, including 2,559 confirmed cases and 322 probable cases.
One-hundred-forty-seven people have died of COVID-19 in Toronto as of Thursday.
