Description: Bacteria often have additional ring shaped DNA fragments -- so called plasmids that may be present as several copies. On the plasmid genetic information is stored that isn't vital to the bacterium but mostly quite useful. Commonly they include genes that provide antibiotic resistance. And there is another defense mechanism: if a bacterium is infected by a virus, it can produce enzymes that decompose the genetic material of the intruder: the restriction enzymes.
