Move over mini consoles: There’s a new retro box about to freshen up the place.
Atari, yes, THAT ATARI, is set to release a new system called the Atari VCS, which stands for Video Computer System. No, Montgomery, they’re not bringing back VHS.
The VCS will come with the Atari Vault Collection, a library of more than 100 all-time classic games including Asteroids, Centipede, Breakout, Missile Command, Gravitar and Yars’ Revenge. But the hardware inside can handle more than just your grandpa’s games; it plays modern ones, too. In fact, it can run Linux, which in turn can run just about any emulator.
For controls, you can choose between the retro joystick or a modern controller, as it’s compatible with any bluetooth controller, including a mouse and keyboard. AND if you don’t want to use your hands for some reason, it can be navigated with simple voice commands.
With WiFi or an Ethernet cable, users can surf the web or enjoy any streaming services. Heck, you can even hook up your own webcam and stream yourself.
Currently, you can only pre-order the Atari VCS on Indiegogo. They have raised more than $2.5 million in just three days. The all-black Onyx and joystick cost $229 while the wood-panelled collector’s edition and joystick cost $299. Expected shipping date is July 2019.
Think you’ll pre-order this console? And which Atari game is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
