Nexus is investing £3m in new tracks for the iconic Metro tunnels that run deep beneath the streets of Newcastle city centre.
Engineers are replacing a two kilometre stretch of track between Jesmond Metro station and the QEII Metro Bridge.
It is the first time that the rails in Metro’s city centre tunnels have been entirely replaced since the system opened to passengers in August 1980.
The work, which started in July, is being carried out in stages over a 22 week period as part of the £350m Metro: all change modernisation programme.
Nexus staff wear protective clothing in case dust and grime is dislodged as they work.
Up to 100,000 people travel through these tunnels every day.
