In this video tutorial, I show how you can prune neglected grapevines that aren’t producing a crop so they can produce fruit. We wanted to help our neighbors and I also saw it as an opportunity to show my girls how to prune grapevines and to serve the neighbors that we love. Special thanks to my stepdaughter Evie Clair for doing the video recording.
Pruning neglected grape vines can be a challenging task, but it's essential for their health and rejuvenation. The best way to prune neglected grape vines depends on the severity of the neglect, but the following steps can be followed as a general guideline:
Remove dead and diseased wood: The first step in pruning neglected grape vines is to remove any dead or diseased wood. This wood is typically dry, brittle, and discolored. Cut it back to healthy wood, making sure to sterilize your pruning tools between cuts to prevent the spread of disease.
Shorten long shoots: If the grape vines have grown too long, the next step is to shorten the shoots. Cut back the shoots to 4-6 buds, which will encourage the growth of new shoots.
Select healthy canes: After the shoots have been shortened, select the healthiest canes to keep. These canes should be strong, have well-spaced buds, and be of a reasonable size. Usually, 2-3 canes per shoot is a good number to keep.
Cut back remaining canes: Cut back the remaining canes to the base of the vine. This will encourage the growth of new shoots, which will become the new fruiting canes for the next season.
Train new shoots: As the new shoots begin to grow, train them to grow in the desired direction by tying them to a support system.
Repeat the process: Pruning neglected grape vines is a multi-year process, and it's essential to repeat the process each year to maintain the health and vigor of the vine. Over time, the vine will recover, and you will have a healthy, productive grape vine.
It's important to note that pruning techniques vary depending on the type of grape vine and the type of pruning system being used. It's best to consult a professional or refer to specific pruning guidelines for your particular grape variety to ensure the best results.
