Mt. Lemmon - Catalina to Clouds - Hiking Arizona's 2nd Greatest Vertical Rise. My brother Patrick has done only one hike in the last three months, and has done very little conditioning, yet was still up for joining me on this marathon hike of Mt. Lemmon. Lemmon is one of the Ultra-Prominent peaks of the continental United States with over 5000 ft. of prominence.

The "Catalina to Clouds" hike involves starting at Catalina State Park and hiking to the summit of Mt. Lemmon, and then back. The elevation difference from the park to the summit is about 6400 ft. but with all the downhill sections on the way up, the total elevation gain I got was 7907 feet, and the total distance was 26.3 miles. It is neat to start out in the desert and gradually transition to the cooler, high elevation pine forests on this sky island. Although I really am not in the condition that I want to be in, or should be for a hike of this length, I still enjoyed the hike tremendously and am glad to have completed this peak that I can see from my backyard.
