ORIGINAL SIN IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE HYPOSTATIC UNION. In this episode we consider the Hypostatic Union in light of Augustinian inherited sin doctrines.
The Hypostatic Union is a Christian doctrine describing the union of Christ's human nature and His divinity in one individual existence. Original Sin asserts that all of Adam's progeny are born stained and corrupted by Original Sin. Yet, Scripture states Jesus took on all of our nature, like us in every respect, so as to redeem us.
The Early Church was explicit in condemning any view which denied Jesus took on Himself all of human nature; our flesh, will, soul and mind - being made like us in every respect so as to redeem us. In fact, Scripture calls a denial of this the "spirit of antiChrist" (1 John 4:2-3), as it is opposed to the truth of who Jesus is and what He accomplished. Many have been deceived by this spirit, but those who truly love Jesus and desire the truth are free to repent and follow Him in truth.
Many adherents of Augustinian philosophy will seek to defend Original Sin or Total Depravity by pointing to the Hypostatic Union. However, if Jesus assumed our fallen nature to redeem us, then He assumed corruption and would be negated from being the Spotless Redeemer of Scripture. If Jesus did not assume our fallen nature, then He didn't redeem our nature.
Here we will explore the origins of the Hypostatic Union and deep dive into this conflict between it and Augustinian philosophy, demonstrating how the two are incompatible.
