I've toured North America out of a Mazda 3, spent 2 years exploring the United Kingdom out of a broken down Citroen Berlingo, and lived out of a Volkswagen Transporter in Australia during lockdown 2020.
After doing a little digging I’ve figured out Why Walmarts are Ending Overnight Camping.
Every Wednesday, I release a video update in the life of this comedy cowboy, so you can get a glimpse into what people are calling 'living the dream.' Laced with an original score by Andrew Watson, grab a front seat beside this pavement pounding comic that never leaves the road.

Why Walmarts are cracking down on Overnight Camping | Urban City Vanlife | Van Life Parking Hacks
I’ve always had mixed feelings about Walmart. I enjoy rolled back prices, finding all I need in one place, and any establishment with a sweatpants dress code, but their track record for suffocating local businesses is getting older than their greeters.
Least they could do is offer that position to the mom and pops they bankrupt.
But none of that really matter when I’ve put rubber to concrete from dusk to dawn, and the freezing air from rolling down the windows no longer keeps me awake because a Walmart becomes an Oasis in the desert.
I’d argue better, because what desert garden offers you refuge, water and a big mac?!
I don’t think anyone wandering the Sahara has been able to supersize their combo on a whim.
The reason my rolling homies and I flock to these Super centers isn’t the Golden Arches, nor is it the treasure hunting through bargain bins of crap the store deemed ‘not worth organizing’.
At the top of every list of road trip hacks is written “Walmart allows you to sleep in their parking lot overnight for free.”
But as we roll into 2022 this trick is becoming less true by the day, and here’s why.
Back in 2010 78% of Walmarts allowed overnight parking, now that number has slipped down to 58%.
RV sales have sky rocketed since Covid with many new comers looking for a way to travel whilst avoiding densely populated public transportation.
The influx in campers on the road means more of us applying that number 1 road trip hack, turning Walmart parking lots into an RV park.
The truth of the matter is many Walmarts don’t even own the land they’re on, and share their parking lots with several other stores.
So even if they’re ok with it, I guarantee the neighbouring Lullulemon isn’t.
Also, Walmarts aren’t on some lawless land. This isn’t Westworld, there are rules.
They need to abide by the bylaws the cities, state or province it resides in instates.
So far there’s no point dwelling on anything I’ve said because unless one of us runs for office, it’s likely out of our control.
Let’s focus on what we CAN do to keep the remaining locations’ parking lots open to our impromptu vehicular slumber parties.
Walmart parking lots are a safe place to pull over when you’re tired and need to rest for a few hours. It’s not a campsite.
Show some courtesy and keep your presence on the down low. If you’re a camper like me who doesn’t cook inside his vehicle, prepare it elsewhere before parking at Walmart for the night or crazy thought buy a pre-made meal from the store you’re parked out front of.
Personally, if there’s no signage restricting an overnight stay, I’m staying, but I live off that old proverb it is better to act decisively and apologize for it later than to seek approval to act, risking delay and objections.
It is worth noting that in some cases abiding by this rule can land you behind bars, and not as a tender who gets to go home, as an offender, where the tips you’re getting, you don’t want.
On the other hand, you can go inside, find the manager and simply ask, which is the polite thing to do, something we can always use a little more of in this world.
Regardless of your execution, sometime before you head out the following day purchase something as a thank you from all of us, for letting our community spend the night and just as you would in a campground, leave your site better then when you found it…
even if the lot belongs Lullulemon.
