Ten of thousands of protesters took to the streets over the weekend in the eastern Russian city of Khabarovsk to protest the arrest of the region's popular governor Sergei Furgal.
Furgal, who came to office in a landslide vote in 2018, was arrested last week on suspicion of orchestrating the murders of several Russian businessmen in 2004 and 2005.
Protestors chanted anti-Putin slogans and accused the authorities of a politically motivated arrest.
Furgal was formally dismissed from his position as governor Monday and has been held in Moscow since his arrest.
