Nurses at Seattle Children’s Hospital are demanding immediate help from management because of what they are calling a crisis in pediatric mental health.
The Washington State Nurses Association told KOMO News the Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit “seems like a combat zone,” as it remains understaffed and struggles to help violent kids in the hospital. The union said Seattle police even had to intervene earlier in November after patients turned over carts, used a pole to swing at people, broke windows, and held a nurse in a chokehold.
The hospital, in an emailed statement, acknowledged the youth's mental and behavioral health crisis and said it has brought in extra staff and security and are seeking more travel nurses.
Nurses told KOMO News they've noticed the work the hospital has done so far, but that doesn't meet all their needs.
