2004 was when the last gen Frontier debuted and I was 10 years old. But now, 18 years later, let’s see if Nissan has been able to bring a modern and competitive truck to fight against things like the tacoma, Ranger, and Colorado
Under the hood is Nissan’s 3.8L n/a V6, it’s a VQ engine and it’s 93% new for 2020.
This truck is new, but under the hood it’s not super modern..but that’s ok because it still makes 310hp and 281 lbft of torque….but most importantly to buyers, it’s simple and therefore RELIABLE
The 3.8L v6 actually makes segment-leading power, but it’s not something that I would consider “fast” - 0-60 is done in 7.5 seconds
Which is of course what you want when you’re towing up to 6700 lbs
Then I guess while we’re talking about truck stuff, yes that’s max towing and payload maxes out at just about 1600 lbs, and you can get a 6 foot bed with a king cab OR in Pro 4X like we have here you can only get crew cab with a 5 foot bed
generally the buyers in this class don’t want super complicated turbo or hybrid set-ups. They want their truck to turn on in the morning, do what they ask of it, turn off at night, and do it all again the next day
It’s still a body-on frame 4x4 pickup with a ladder chassis, but the engine likes to rev freely, the 9 speed transmission is a Mercedes design built by Jatco and feels right at home here
And the ride is pretty decent. In the Tacoma, with an empty bed, you’ll get a good amount of rear axle shutter over small to medium bumps, but the ride here is pretty dialed in
Now, with that said, this Pro4x has bilstein shocks and this may be unpopular, but I’ve never met a Bilstein on a truck that I liked…However, it’s still better than the taco
ACP, AA (not wireless)
8 inch screen or 9 inch
Cameras are terrible
At least you have 360 cam (auto in 4lo) they call it their off road mode
Heated seats
Heated wheel
*lots of hard buttons*
Wireless charger
Rear seats are decent sized
Storage under them
Rear window (manual)
Sunroof
Dope seats?
Hexagon stitch (lambo)
Semi-digital cluster (7 inch)
Feel more spacious/comfortable?
120v in the back seat along with USB and USBc
LKA, lane departure, but pro pilot is not available
One thing we have the get out of the way right away is that this is not a TRD Pro competitor. Yes, this is the most off-road ready Frontier you can get from the factory, but it actually competes closest to the TRD-Offroad tacoma. Maybe in the future we’ll get something like a Frontier NISMO-4X, but with that out of the way let’s head into the forest to see what this thing can do.
There actually isn’t a lot of gadgets to fiddle with in this Frontier. In the tacoma you get things like A-Trac and Multi-terrain select, but with this Frontier I’’m just gunna lock up the rear diff and hope for traction
When you go into 4Lo the 360 cameras automatically come on like they would in a Tacoma and the resolution is about just as bad as it was in the Tacoma too, but at least you can see all around you
With the smaller size, in this forested section the snow is really the hardest obstacle to deal with, but with 4-lo on and the rear locked traction wasn’t an issue.
We’re going to do a little climbing now, again nothing that will be super challenge for the truck, but with the snow it might be a little less straight forward
Again, diff locked, this time in 4-Hi, and we’re just going to send it up this hill
And now at the top, we’re going to test out the hill descent feature. With the 4x4 system engaged, rear diff locked, and hill descent on, that’s literally all of the off-road aids
And then we’ll turn hill descent off because we’re going to approach the second, more challenging hill.
And this is probably a good time to share the numbers
Approach: 32.3
Breakover: 19.6
Departure: 23 (cuz of bed overhang)
Ground clearance:9.5 inches (less with the rock rails*)
We’ve also got read-outs in our gauge cluster that show our pitch and roll
Now, we do have Bilstein dampers which are tuned for this sort of thing with greater compression and stroke
It’s still nice to have the 360 cameras on something like this to see exactly where my wheels are
We had some nice flex out on these with the Bronco, but we have to be more careful with this because it’s got less clearance and more overhangs past the axles to hit
