Cattle belch out serious amounts of greenhouse gases, especially methane — about 220 pounds a year of methane, which is 80 times more harmful than carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas spewed out by cars.

A new group called AgNext, led by Colorado State University, is delving into sustainability issues at a small feedlot near campus. AgNext receives funding from the beef industry, and researchers say they hope to work closely with ranchers and other producers to implement solutions.
