On 26 April 1999, BBC journalist and Crimewatch presenter Jill Dando was murdered on the front doorstep of her home in Fulham, London. That evening, ITV News aired a special bulletin in tribute to Ms Dando, who was praised by grieving colleagues and contemporaries across the industry. As well as hearing from those mourning Ms Dando, the programme also recorded real-time developments in the investigation into her death. They broadcast the description of the man believed to be responsible for Dando's killing and who continues to elude capture to this day. They also interrupted the bulletin to share the breaking news that Ms Dando had been killed by a single gunshot wound to the head. That evening's 20-minute ITV Evening News bulletin served both to celebrate Dando's work as a respected reporter and support appeals for information that might assist the investigation into her death.
